The UK has approximately 3 million existing conservatories, many with polycarbonate or single-glazed roofs that make them uncomfortable for much of the year. A solid roof replacement is the fastest-growing segment in the conservatory market — and for good reason. It transforms a problem room into genuine living space.

Why Solid Roofs

Four Reasons to Make the Switch

Warmer in Winter

A tiled roof dramatically reduces heat loss compared to polycarbonate or glass. Your conservatory retains warmth from your heating system, making it comfortable even on the coldest days.

Cooler in Summer

Solid roofing eliminates the greenhouse effect that makes glass-roofed conservatories unbearable in direct sunlight. Temperatures stay stable and comfortable, even on south-facing conservatories.

Quieter in the Rain

No more turning the television up when it rains. A tiled roof absorbs the sound of heavy rainfall, making the room as quiet as any other room in your house.

Looks Like a Real Room

Once plastered internally, a solid-roof conservatory looks and feels like a natural extension of your home — not a bolt-on afterthought. It’s the single most effective upgrade you can make.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a solid roof work on my existing conservatory?

The Equinox system is designed to be lightweight enough for most existing conservatory frames. However, a structural assessment is recommended before proceeding to confirm that your existing foundations and frame can support the replacement roof. Your installer will be able to advise.

Do I need planning permission for a solid roof?

In many cases, replacing a conservatory roof with a solid roof is permitted development. However, if your conservatory was exempt from building regulations because of its glazed roof (the 75% glazing rule), adding a solid roof may change its planning and building regulations status. Check with your local planning authority before proceeding.

Do I need building regulations approval?

Potentially, yes. The change from a glazed to a solid roof can affect the building regulations classification of your conservatory. You may need to demonstrate compliance with Part L (thermal performance), Part A (structural safety), and other relevant parts. Your installer should arrange building control sign-off.

How long does installation take?

The roof structure is typically installed within 2-3 days by an experienced team. Internal plastering and finishing takes an additional 1-2 days. Most projects are completed within a week.

Can I add a roof lantern to a solid roof?

Yes. A Eurocell Skypod roof lantern can be integrated into the solid roof to provide overhead natural light. This gives you the thermal benefits of a solid roof with the daylight benefits of glazing.

Do you install solid roofs?

No. PTF Glass is a supply-only business. We supply solid roof systems for installation by qualified tradespeople. We do not provide installation services.
